State Trails Reminds of Avalanche Dangers
Snowmobilers and other winter outdoor enthusiasts are encouraged to be aware of potential avalanche dangers. Wyoming State Trails would like to remind everyone, whether they are snowmobiling, backcountry skiing or snowshoeing, to take precautions and be prepared in case a slide is triggered.
The Bridger-Teton Avalanche Forest Center in Wyoming and the Colorado Avalanche Information Center are reporting "considerable" danger at this time, meaning with the warming temperatures "dangerous unstable slabs exist on steep terrain on certain aspects. Human triggered avalanches are probable. Natural avalanches are possible." The Colorado Center forecasts for the entire state of Colorado, which includes the "Front Range." The Front Range forecast offers some of the same conditions as the Snowy Range - Sierra Madres areas of southern Wyoming.
"Snowmobilers and other enthusiasts should learn about avalanches and what to do in case they, or a companion, are caught in one. There are courses available each year that teach avalanche rescue procedures using beacons, probes and shovels," said Chris McNeil, safety and education coordinator for Wyoming State Trails.
"Knowing what to look for with avalanche forecasts, snow pack conditions, weather conditions and terrain issues will keep everyone safe. It could happen at any time; so be prepared," McNeil emphasized.
For more information on avalanche safety courses in Wyoming, contact Chris McNeil at 307-335-8747.To see current avalanche forecasts, visit Wyoming State Trails Snow Conditions at http://wyotrails.state.wy.us/Snow/Conditions/index.asp and click on the links under Avalanche Reports.

Watch out for that tree!!

Wyo. State Trails, Forest Service encourages snowmobilers to be safe
Snowmobilers heading out to enjoy their public lands are reminded to be aware of potential hazards, both above and below the snow.
“ The beetle epidemic has left a lot of dead trees along forest routes, including snowmobile trails,” said Mary Peterson, Forest Supervisor of the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forests. “Some dead trees may have already fallen on routes and been covered up with snow, so snowmobilers need to be extra vigilant.” The forest service has been clearing roads and trails but with the large number of miles on the Medicine Bow and Routt National Forests, they haven’t all been cleared yet. Some winter and summer recreation trails may need to be closed until the trees are removed.
Snowmobilers may also encounter rocks, stumps and other obstacles under the snow.
“ Use good judgment and always consider the changing environment. High wind events can and will bring trees down. Use caution when seeking shelter in the trees,” said Brad Hill, Program Manager for Wyoming State Trails Program. “
“Always have a map of your route, know the weather, and let someone know where you are going and when you expect to return. And never snowmobile alone.”
Please contact the forest service about downed trees on groomed snowmobile trails.
Snow condition information and more snowmobile safety tips are at wyotrails.state.wy.us/Snow/Conditions. The Wyoming State Trails Program partners with land management agencies to create, maintain and provide funding and or labor and equipment for trails, including grooming snowmobile trails. An emphasis is placed upon the federal lands that host 98% of the 8,500 miles of trails in Wyoming. A message from the WSSA:
As WSSA's Board of Directors it's our job to fight to protect access to trails, powder and spectacular scenery in Wyoming. We need your help. The fight for access is serious. It's an issue at the forefront in Wyoming and if we lose here, the momentum will carry the issue to other states which depend upon public access for snowmobiling.
For just a few dollars you can join the WSSA and/or your local club to help in the fight. We are growing and need to count YOU as one of us in the ongoing battle. We lobby, write to Congress and the White House as we plead our case for access. We need more members to make our voices heard.
Your dues are really just an investment in the future of the sport you love and want to share with your family, friends, kids and grand kids. Help us fight to protect access. Join the WSSA today!
